About
Hillforts Map is a map and directory of 4,147 hillforts across Britain and Ireland. It is built on the Atlas of Hillforts of Britain and Ireland.
The map clusters every fort. Zoom in and the groups separate until a single site is in view. You can also browse by nation and then by county or unitary authority: Scotland, England, Wales, the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, and the Isle of Man. Lists and maps can be filtered by type of fort, condition, rampart layout, and whether a scheduled monument number is recorded. You can search by name, parish, or Atlas number.
Each site page sets out the key facts for that record, including where it is, the type and condition, and the identifiers and links held for it. Where a short introduction is shown, it was written for this site from those facts.
Visiting responsibly
Many hillforts are on private land, and many are scheduled monuments. A page on this site is not permission to visit. Check access before you set out, keep to public rights of way and other land you are allowed to use, and follow signs on the ground. Do not disturb the earthworks.
